Jesus as the Sacred Heart stands behind the family. Mary's own flaming heart is pierced by a sword as Simeon had prophesied in Luke 2:35. The lily stalk is Joseph's attribute. He is portrayed here as a vigorous young man, not the aging dotard of medieval representations, and it is he who holds the child. This more positive characterization began with Molanus's defense of his virility (269-73).
